What is the importance of shell in Japanese traditions?

i'm just wondering what is the meaning of giving a shell to someone you love??Coz i've seen the same scene in a love story quite a few times. And these stories are set in ancient Japan. Just wondering if it really has a mening or just a scene to make the story more romantic.
