divine rights refers to a monarchist (king's) right to rule by divine power from god. He was obeyed unquestioned because he was appointed by God. this changed during the enlightenment. People wanted a say in their goverment.

Both the french and the American revolutionists had the same ideas. That's a link. That's why the French gave the Americans that statue of liberty. They were earlier, and wanted to encourage and reward the American revolutionists.
