French Expression Help?

Anyone know how to say "Understand before speaking." tihis is related to translating a sort of, understand the person before you speak to them. How can I say this au francais?

Il faut comprendre avant de parler. In general.

Edit: you can also say "Comprends avant de parler." but that sounds more like an order.

If you want to say it as a command, it would be "Comprenez avant parler." or "Comprend avant parler." depending on whether you want to be formal or informal.
