| Explain the meaning of this Japanese proverb.? ?????????? "Au wa wakare no hajime" I understand that it literally means "To meet is the start of parting"; and it used to express the meaning that "You cannot live with people you know for ever", that is "there must be a day that you will part from them". What I do not understand is... Why the parting starts with the meeting? |
| |||
| Meeting is the beginning of separation. Meeting is the subject of your sentence, hence why it is at the start. Japanese sentences are subject_object_verb. Au is the subject so au is up front. The parting starts with meeting because you cannot possibly part with someone if you have not met them yet. |
