Civil Court orders for legal name changes?

I had a typographical error on my birth certificate. I called the new york department of vital records and they told me that my mom need to get a civil court order to change my name and hers because they spelt her last name wrong on my birth certificate. I live in canada and i was born in the u.s . I would like to know how can i get a court order to change my name in canada if the error was made in new york. Would my mom have to go to new york and get it changed from there or can she settle it in canada ?

Just get a lawyer in the area where you were born to submit for a name change. We just had 2 this morning in court, people weren't even here, just their lawyer.

Yes, your mother has to go to the city or county of where this occurred. This is due to the Homeland Security laws for terrorism and identity fraud. It requires a petition to the court, a hearing and a court issued name change document to ensure that a terrorist is not trying to change their name.
You can thank the terrorists for this little hassle!
