how old do you have to be when you go and just talk to a recruiter about joining

17 straight up.

But there are many things that be done if younger. Usually the various recruiting posts have someone from various services. Someone will be able to get you into a youth day or some sort of personal tour at a base or post. People like to be asked and it looks good for the recruiter. You can call a base and ask directly.... public affairs would work. If there is anything that you want to do just ask to be in contact with someone who does that.

People like to be asked. Most people do not realize that if a 13 to 17 year old asks they can see and do much.

17. because then if you actually want to join, you can get parent consent and go right after you graduate high school.

When I was 16, the Navy recruiter told me that he was not allowed to talk to me until I was 17, even if I contacted him directly. My age didn't seem to phase the Army, however.

Now it seemed like it was a different story in my HS career center. There were often recruiters there that would talk to anyone who was interested. The difference may have been that the recruiters in the career center did not take down any information on those who wanted to talk.

I would be at least 17 with a parent with me. Research first and know what you want to ask.
