The AF is just special in certain ways. People entering the AF are generally technicians of some sort. While there are vehicle drivers, guys passing out towels in the gym for MWR etc... like all branches, it is a technically dominated branch in which airmen are generally living and working on base full time. There is very little roughing it except for specific disciplines like specforces (Pararescue, Paraweather, etc...) or for fields again like weather which are often attached to army artillery units and airfields which need a meterorologist but do not train their own and rely on the AF supplying them. To attract people that have many of these skills and retain them as much of the training received translates to good earning jobs in the civilian sector they have to have perks of some sort. more importantly though it is about morale. providing a nice enviornment to live and work is hugely important. When I was in tech school I was spoiled to go to a base voted best mess (Dining) in the military several times. The navy personnel used to marvel that we had padded bench boothes, tableclothes and centerpieces, and busboys to clear our tables aside from the great chow- steak and lobster Fridays, lamb every week, all prepared and served by a private contract company. Our dorms (Not every base I was at but almost half) had wall to wall carpet in the rooms, nice furniture, and later on were all wired for cable/internet in each room. If one so chose maid service was available for a fee from an outside contractor. I won't argue that all branches deserve great facilities and equal ammenities. I lived on army bases I thought a slumlord would cringe at and navy bases that were poorly kept as well. The thing is however when you look at each branch, the AF is the one that is generally going to be on base full time. Army and the Marines are often times deployed or in the field training and believe me when they get a warm dry place with a real bed and some privacy they appreciate it. Sailors are often aboard ship for part of each year and like the soldiers appreciate a return for the same reason- family etc... aside. Don't forget the Coast Guard has a pretty nice set up too and is often overlooked but no less valuable than other branches. While I'd never take anything away from the leathernecks as they are the best at what they do in the world, every branch has very special skills to offer and although they may not be in physically tough jobs it doesn't mean what they do isn't tough in the least, just different. |

b/c the air force has a better way of life compaired to the rest of the military. they are also the youngest branch and get more attention. and most air force bases are near other branches such as army, cuz they have the bigger equipment such as planes to transport soldiers and all their gear to wherever they need to go.
