Questions about the ROYAL NAVY? 1. Why is it not engaged in a war situation at the moment? 2. I am overweight slightly but does this matter when applying? 3. My parents are against joining. What could I do to persuade them rather than go uni? Is it a good career compared to the RAF and army which are very dangerous. Not saying this isn't, but it's going to be a safer environment on sea with radar and advanced detection technology on board. Cheers

1. The navy is engaged with the war in Afghanistan and Iraq but as these are both land locked countries the navy is playing more of a support role. But remember if the unlikely happens and Mighty Britain finds itself in a war against a 1st world nation like France or Germany or even America the navy will be the first line of defence. 2. As long as you can pass the fitness tests it doesn't matter what wait you are but logic says that if your to overweight it will be harder to pass. Remember a motto of the armed forces is 'that no mater what your role is, you'll be better able to do it if you are in good shape.' so hit the gym and start running good luck! 3. Joining the navy doesn't have to mean not going to university you can do courses while serving and all that. the navy can provide real opportunities and a worthwhile career. Perhaps get a recruiter to speak with your folks. Well simply put "ITS A GOOD CAREER IF YOU WANT TO BE IN THE NAVY, OTHERWISE I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND IT". It all depends what your looking for weather it be ACTION, ADVENTURE a CHALLENGE or a chance to work with state of the art equipment.

1) Who says its not? 2) Not as long as you can get a life belt on. 3) Point out the cost! 4) Most service people in the RAF don't get anywhere near the action. Army not so good. Navy, well you have a very good set of rose tinted glasses. Remember the Falklands!
