| Should the Iraqis be allowed to vote on a continued US military presence in
their country? I believe that the Iraqi government should allow the people to vote on whether they would like for the US military to continue to play a large active role in defending their country. If they vote no then we should begin an immediate phased withdrawal. If they vote yes then they should agree to benchmark timetables in terms of military strength required for takeover of responsibility for providing for their own defense. Further a yes vote should also require that they pay no less than 80% of the associated costs of our continued military involvement. If Iraq is truly to enjoy the benefits of being a free society they must show that this is what they desire and that they are willing to fight the fight which freedom requires of all who aspire to it. We cannot force responsibility on them if they are unwilling to accept it and we cannot continue to maintain active war operations forever. It is just not practical or cost effective. What do you think? |
