| Can an enlisted person in the Marines become anything hirer than a Private?
For example. Could a Private later become a Corporal even though the Private did not go to college or anything like that. Pretty much my question is: Is it possible to be promoted even with no college or will you forever remain a Private for your enlisted career? Thank you.

You can go from Private or E-1 all the way up to General if you want and have the drive. First off the Marines promotes the first three rankings based on time in service. So when you are a private you can go up to Lance Corporal on time alone which would make you a E-3. To get promoted after that you have to get points. These are acquired through schooling, PT, Tests, Pros and Cons, Ratings evals and so forth. If you want to become an officer you can always go to school while in the service. If you go this route you are referred as a maverick and much respect goes along with this as enlisted men will respect you since you were one to begin with. I hope this helps and Semper Fi!!!

yes, a Corporal is not an officer. i went in as a PFC (private first class) and when i got out i was a Corporal. a private can become any of the enlisted ranks private first class lance corporal corporal sargent staff sargent gunnery sargent master sargent first sargent master gunnery sargent sargent major you can also cross over and become a warrent officer and then officer up to i think major.

In general, somebody intending to make an enlisted career in any of the US armed forces will need to continue his or her education. Once somebody starts looking at the senior NCO positions he will discover that he needs a college degree to remain competitive.
