Petty Officers in the Marine Corps?

I was reading a photo caption on the DoD website, and it said "U.S. Marine Petty Officer 2nd class..." I thought only the Navy had petty officers as a rank. Is this a typo or what? Can someone clarify?
Hey, THEAmericanPatriot, this photo and caption are from the OFFICIAL DoD wesbsite...hardly the "liberal military hating, lily livered media" you speak of. Not that I don't think that type of media exists, but you're totally wrong here.

It wouldn't be a Marine Petty Officer. It may be a corpsman assigned to the Marines and the person who captioned the photo misspoke. The Marines use Navy Corpsmen who continue to use Navy ratings.

If it is that photo about operations in Djibouti with the Horn of Africa force, you need to look at the caption again. It is a Major in the Korean Marine Corps and a Petty Officer Second Class in the Navy. Both are correctly identified.

* Petty Officers are Navy. Navy Corpsmen (medics) serve with the Marine detachments and wear Marine uniforms.

Leave it to the liberal military hating, lily livered media to screw up again. They can't seem to get ANYTHING right. I've seen them ID an ENLISTED sailor as an ENSIGN (officer), a story of a destroyer with a picture of a multi-command ship of a completely different class, mis-named an air-craft carrier (picture of the NIMITZ while talking about the AMERICA). And on and on.
(USN, retired, in the largest military area on the east coast)

I think the Marines still do have some Navy type discriptive tags because my Uncle was called Gunny SGT... . In the Air Force, no matter how low you go, you are always a proud Airman, kind of like a postal worker!

"Only a real Airman can get away with that!"

Petty officer is a Navy rank. There are no petty officers in the USMC. The marines are part of the Dept. of the Navy, but they have ranks similar to the U.S. Army.

petty officers are navy ranks. not marine corps ranks. however, it could have been a corpsmen or something like that. but no, petty officers are not in the marine corps, even though the marine corps is a department of the navy, its rank and rate structure is similar to the army.
