Kevin S has a spectacular aura about
Stock Market: WHO Buys Stock in relation to volume percentages?

I understand the market is driven by emotion, greed, supply, demand, unpredictability, randomness, and all the other cliches, whether related or not - I DON'T CARE (disclaimer to idiotic answers, thanks and sorry). What I want to know is:

Who fills most of the overall trading volume of stock? I know the market well enough, and a link for this information (DATA AND STATISTICS, NOT GENERAL INFO) is what I am looking for here. I understand that investing firms (mutual funds, etc.) buy the largest amounts of stocks, but also that there are millions and millions of private longer and mid term investors, as well as the volume that changes hands from active traders. (note: market makers do not count here) What is the percentages based on volume for each category, on average? I am actively researching short term trading, and I need to know who I am competing against (and to what degrees)! The first link to such detailed information or percentages will get my best answer. Thanks!
