Do all the proceeds from girl scout cookie sales go back to the troops? I can't imagine that it costs that much to keep a girl scout troop going. I remember being in boy scouts and we never had to sell anything. I can't help thinking that someone is making some $ on the side. How much do the bakers bring in? Why don't we just sell the cookies in the grocery store? Is it important for girl scouts to learn capitalism at a young age?

vicky Has it Right!!!! As a Girl Scout and Girl Scout Leader for more than 25 years I can inform the public that the Cookie Money is vital and provides many levels of programs, training and activities for Girl Scouts. Buy GS Cookies even if you do not eat them--freeze them and give them away for Christmas! The funds do provide more then the public might ever imagine and this is a positive way to support the young people in your community.

With every box sold, approximately 70 percent of the proceeds go to the local girl scout council to support girl scouting. Of that amount, about 12 to 17 percent goes back to the local troop, which can put that money towards a community service project, field trip or other activity of their choice. And the balance, about 30 percent off the top, goes right back to the one of the two licensed girl scout cookie bakers, ABC Bakers, a unit of Interbake Foods, and Little Brownie Bakers, although the percentage of net profit is unclear. if there was no money coming in from sales they have throughout the year then they wouldnt be able to go camping and go on fieldtrips. joining the girlsscouts would be pointless. it goes towards the trips they take when they go carolling (spelling) at christmas time in the senior centers for the little gifts they make to take with them.. the only people making the money is the people high up the actual girl scouts get very little from their efforts boy scouts do have to sell things dont you remember the popcorn sales? my husband was a boyscout and my oldest son was a boyscout i was in girlscouts... and boys i think sold more then the girls did. the boys had their popcorn money help out those wooden derby car races those cost quite a bit of money. Popcorn SUPPORT THE TROOPS Operation: Popcorn NEW IDEA to SUPPORT THE TROOPS Click here for an ONLINE APPEAL to Support the Troops through Operation: Popcorn! Scout and leaders are encouraged to send an email (see this sample) to friends and family around the country to inform them about Operation: Popcorn and to invite them to participate. The recipient can go to www.OrderPopcorn.com, put in your individual Scout Order Key or your unit Order Key, if you prefer and place their order. Trail's End will deliver $25.00 worth of product to our servicemen and women overseas and your unit will earn commission, too. The Gulf Ridge Council has joined with Trail's End Popcorn to help provide a taste of home to soldiers, sailors and Marines serving overseas and to the stateside families of those servicemen and women. "Operation: Popcorn" is a means by which customers can make a $25.00 donation of popcorn to the military. Scout units handle the military orders just like any other popcorn order except that there is no distribution of the product to handle later on. All donations will go to Trail's End and they will take care of distributing product to those who serve our country and to their families. The Scout unit will earn the same commission from the $25.00 "military" orders as they did or would during the regular popcorn sale so it's a win-win for everyone. Scouting Dollars Who Pays for Scouting? Youth Members Assisted by their parents or guardians, boys in Cub Scouting, Boy Scouting, and Varsity Scouting and young men and women in Venturing pay their share from personal savings and participation in money-earning projects. Members buy their own uniforms, handbooks, and personal equipment and pay their own camp fees. Packs, Troops, Teams, and Posts Weekly or monthly dues and funds from approved money-earning projects meet expenses for supplies and activities in the Cub Scout pack, Boy Scout troop, Varsity Scout team, and Venturer crew. These monies help pay for camping equipment, registration fees, Boys' Life magazine, uniform insignia, special activities, and program materials. Community Organizations Each chartered organization using the Scouting program provides a meeting place and adult volunteer leadership for its BSA unit(s). The chartered organization and local council must approve unit money-earning projects before the launch of the project. Local Council Financial resources for the local council (the local nonprofit corporation chartered by the National Council) come from an annual Friends of Scouting (FOS) campaign, local United Ways, foundation grants, special events, project sales, investment income, trust funds, bequests, and gifts of real and personal property. These funds provide for professional staff supervision, organization of new Scouting units, service for existing units, training of volunteer leaders, and maintenance of council camps. They also finance the operation of the local council service center, where volunteer leaders can obtain literature, insignia, advancement badges, and other items vital to the program. In addition, the service center maintains advancement and membership records. National Organization Funds to support the national organization of the Boy Scouts of America come from registration fees, local council service fees, investment income, Scouting and Boys' Life magazines, sale of uniforms and equipment, contributions from individuals, and foundation grants. These monies help to deliver the program of the BSA (through four regional service centers and more than 300 local councils) to chartered organizations that use the Scouting program to meet the needs of their youth. The national office Provides local councils with program development and evaluation as well as camp and office planning, extensive financial counseling, planned giving and fund-raising information, and professional personnel support Coordinates a communications network through magazines and literature (handbooks, merit badge pamphlets, brochures, training materials, and professional development training) Creates a climate of positive understanding and support Makes available uniforms, equipment, and program supplies Administers national high-adventure bases and national events (jamborees, National Eagle Scout Association and Order of the Arrow conferences, and National Council meetings) Maintains communication with chartered organizations that use the Scouting program (religious institutions, PTA, civic organizations, labor unions, professional organizations, business, and industry) Maintains liaison with Scouting associations in other countries as a members of the world scout conference

When Girl Scouts sell cookies, I doubt they even think about capitalism. It's about teaching planning, teamwork, finance, organization, communication and goal setting. From Wikipedia and the Girl Scout Cookie order form: Profits go to the local Girl Scout Council and individual troops, and is used to pay for events and activities for the Girl Scouts, maintenance of the council's Girl Scout camps and other properties, cookie sale incentives, and Council administration costs. Each council can provide a breakdown showing how cookie money is used in that council (this information is usually printed on the back of the girl's Cookie Order Form).
