Bf more excited about babies than engagement/marriage?

Sometimes I feel like my boyfriend is more into having a child with me than getting married.

He is all about talking about babies, but then doesn't seem as excited when talking about engagement or marriage. He has said that he would marry me any day, but then wondered why we would need to rush into an engagement. And then I wonder why we would need to rush into getting pregnant!

I just strongly believe in the order of engagement, marriage, THEN pregnancy. Why might my bf feel how he does?
