What happens to my husband's pension after divorce?

I will be receiving half of my husband's pension after our divorce is final. My question is when do I have access to that money, as I am a single mom and my financial situation is not very stable. Do I have to wait til he retires or can I draw from it, and take a penalty. If I do have a penalty, how much would that be?
