Why is Gay Marriage illegal?

I'm not gay myself, but I was wondering about this. If government isn't supposed to do anything with religion then why is gay marriage illegal? Gay, lesbian, bisexual, straight people all were born with who they were attracted to, you can't decide if you are attracted to a certain type of person or not. So why single out a group of people? Isn't that just like discrimination against different ethnicities? I think its totally arrogant and unfair. What about you?
