Why would a mother try to get her son to divorce a good wife?

I'm not a servent by any stretch of the imagination, but I do what I can to keep my husband happy...within reason. He tells me and everyone he's talked to since we met that I'm the best thing person he's ever had in his life. So, why would his mother constantly tell him I'm no good for him, and he needs to dump my "sorry *beep*?" He likes one of his ex-girlfriends, and she's trying to get them back together even though his ex doesn't want him, and he doesn't want her. The ex treated him like a slave. She never lifted a finger around the house. He did everything but certain things individual people have to do for themselves. She didn't work, and they almost got evicted because she would steal his money and do whatever she did with it. Oh, and how they broke up is a terrible story from my POV. She planned it all out to hurt him as bad as she could. First, she had a friend come over, and when it was about time for my now-husband to get home, they started performing acts on each other.....
Of course, he caught them. She said she's sorry, but she wasn't satisfied with him anymore. Then told him she was pregnant, and the baby wasn't his. The last thing she said was she wanted to be with the father of her child. He later found out about the whole thing was a farce just to hurt him. See, he wants children very much, and telling him she was pregnant with another man's baby that he wasn't gonna raise was the worst thing she could do. It was so bad that he couldn't summon the strength to threaten to kick the guy's butt. Anyway, so this is what his mother wants him to go back to. How can a mother want that for her son?

Do you think that perhaps you are reading your mother-in-law all wrong? There are some Mothers who do not think any woman is good enough for their sons.
