Why do they say the 1st year of marriage is the hardest?

Is it because in that first year, typically 2 people are merging into one household and getting used to being under foot with each other 24/7, versus having your alone time? and getting used to each others habits--no matter how cute or annoying?
Would this still be true if you lived together before getting married--that the 1st year of "married" life is hardest -- or just the first year of cohabitating--whether married or not??
I ask, and put out there what I "think" might be the reason they say that, but wanted to know if there were other things I didn't know about that make people say that.
