| If we separate church and state....why do you oppose gay marriage?

California's high court is debating gay marriage, and many oppose it. Notice the signs being held in protest reference God and the Bible. However, should one's religious beliefs and opinion of interpretation of scripture be a determining factor in enacting legislation?
Where does this stop if we allow folks to govern by their religious beliefs? Who determines which religion's beliefs to adhere to?
And, if you put aside the religious opposition, why do you really care if I can visit my partner of 18 years in intensive care, provide long term care to him, or have inheritance rights of his property.....exactly how does this threaten your life in any way?
Point is...marriage is not about walking down the aisle in a church....it is about humanity, and being able to provide love and care to the person you have devoted your life to, etc...
