why do people do arranged marriages?

is it becuase they are too shy to find someone themselves/unsocial? and why do they take such a risk. Ei.. the other person they are marrying could be a complete weirdo/mentally retareded/obbsessive/evil/selfish/2 faced/and they have to deal with them for the rest of their lives?
