Why do men buy engagement rings...propose marriage...?

and then act like marriage is going to be the end of their life as the day approaches...and after the wedding they blab on and on ad nauseum about how they lost their freedom?
I'm not in that situation...I've just always found this 'quirk' in men to be pathetically humorous...
