Does a marriage with more than two people ever work?

It wouldn't work in my situation so this is hypothetical for me. It seems to me that it often doesn't turn out that all of a persons needs can be met by one other person. The options of cheating or getting a divorce seem lousy. In some cases it seems like it would work (for instance) to have three people in a committed marriage type relationship. Have any of you experienced this or are you aware of how it has worked out for people?
