If I went to NJ & got a civil union, then a hetero marriage in a different

state, would I be breaking the law? Just curious... and hypothetical.
I don't EVER plan on doing this lol

If the marriage is never legally recognized, (like you have the ceremony but never sign the certificate) then no.

However, a civil union is basically a JP marriage (Justice of the Peace). If you are talking about same-sex... then those unions are only recognized in certain states. So if you went to state that did NOT recognize it and got legally married, you wouldn't be breaking the law (technically).

I'm assuming you mean a same sex civil union?

I don't think you'd be breaking the law, because I don't know of any state that defines it to be crime to have both a civil union and a marriage.
