Do marriages after a divorce matter?

So many people have been married two, three, or four times after a divorce; I'm not thinking of widows and widowers. What makes people think they can have a valid marriage after a divorce (even church people)? Even from a secular standpoint, if you didn't keep your wedding vows the first, second, or third times, what makes a new spouse think you'll keep them the fourth time around?
