Is it true that John Quincy Adams was an Anti-Freemason?

Is it true that John Quincy Adams was an Anti-Freemason?

If this is true, what were his reasons? It seems strange that he would be when his father spoke fondly of masons and many of his fathers friends were masons.
Also, did John Quincy Adams have a good relationship with his father?

Re: Is it true that John Quincy Adams was an Anti-Freemason?

JQA was definetly opposed to Masonry. He had several reasons, mostly he felt that the Masons had too much influence in politics and government. John Adams, was not a Mason, but you are quite correct, that John Adams had many masonic friends, and was favorable toward Masonry.

I do not know exactly, but I think John Adams and JQA had a good relationship. There is a mini-series on HBO, about John Adams, and there are several good biographies of John Adams, the one by David McCullogh is excellent.
