A number that cannot be expressed as a ratio, hence the name. Basically, it can't be shown in fraction form.

An irrational number usually refers to a number that can't be described as a fraction or ratio. For example, pi is irrational: the decimal places go on to infinity with no patterns. sqrt of 2 is the same way. (Many square roots of non-perfect squares (i.e. 4, 9 , 16, 25, etc.) are irrational.
