| Hard/Tricky Math Question, Please Help?!? The fine for speeding on the highways of most states is a function of speed of the car. The fine for speeding on the NJ turnpike, for example, can generally be determined by the formula: F(s) = 3(s - 65) + 98 Where F is the fine in dollars and s is the speed your car was going in miles per hour. A. What would the fine be if you were caught traveling 85mph? B. Suppose you received a speeding ticket for $203. How fast were you going? Explain how you arrived at your answer. C. Why is it unlikely for someone to receive a $50 speeding fine on the NJ turnpike? thank you very much for your help |

| A. What would the fine be if you were caught traveling 85mph? F(s) = 3(s - 65) + 98 F(85) = 3(85 - 65) + 98 F(85) = 3(20) + 98 F(85) = 60 + 98 F(85) = 158 B. Suppose you received a speeding ticket for $203. How fast were you going? 203 = 3(s - 65) + 98 203 - 98 = 3(s - 65) 105 = 3(s - 65) 105/3 = (s - 65) 35 = s - 65 100 = s You were going 100 mph C. Why is it unlikely for someone to receive a $50 speeding fine on the NJ turnpike? If you were going 65 mph, the fine would be $98. You could only get a $50 fine by going less than 65 mph, which is not over the turnpike speed limit. |
