1) Once upon a time there were three even consecutive integers. The first said, "write me down." The second said, "write half of me," and the third integer said "take a third of me." A voice boomed off-stage: "Now add all three phrases together and the answer will be 17." Find the numbers. 2) Joe and Bob had to pick a wheelbarrow of rocks from the baseball field. Joe could do it alone in 3 hrs. Bob could do it alone in 2 hrs. In how many hours could they do it together? 3) Octavian invests some money at 8.5% and half as much at 10%, then receives $1,000 in interest. How much did he invest at each rate? |

1) the numbers are 8,10,12 8+10/2+12/3=8+5+4=17 2) Joe does 1/3 job in 1 hour, bob 1/2 job in 1 hour. together: 1/2+1/3=5/6 in one hour. --> 6/5 hours to do the job = 1hour+12 minutes. 3) x*8.5/100 + (x/2)*10/100 = $1000 13.5x/100 = $1000 x=~ $7407.4 |
