how come most people seem to want to trivialize mathematics?

and just reduce it to mere intellectual insignificata to be manipulated on a peice of scratch paper? im in college and this seems to be the prevalent attitude of even the professors. whats up?? am i just over "Romantic" about numbers math etc etc?
