Well, since it's an 8 year old, algebra is out. Is multiplication?

8 x 8 checkerboard means that there are eight rows of eight squares each.
(If multiplication is OK) -- That means there must be 8 x 8 squares, or 64.

Since each square has to be either black or white, and they alternate, half of the board has to be black, half has to be white. (once again, if division is allowed... which, in third grade, there should be) that means that it's 64/2, or 32 white and 32 black.

each row has 8 squares half of them are white half are black
therefore the answer would be 4
that's division not multiplication
