One controversial method is the constructivist approach.

Give students data and first principles--guide students to derive relationships.

However, most controversy arises when administrators do not understand the mathematics that a teacher is teaching. To feel superior, they nit pick at procedure and documentation. If the administrator was a social studies teacher (as most of them are due to overabundance--easier route I guess), then the administrator wants a math classroom to operate like a social studies classroom of 15 years ago.

If you are smart enough to teach Math...you could make more money working in industry...scratch that...American industry is largely dead. Enjoy your teaching career. There is no controversy in math like there is in biology.
