| Is this an ok essay for my journalism class? Shrieks could be heard reverberating around the school corridors as students raced around the Lake campus on a humid Friday afternoon. Balloons filled the crowded halls as students shuffled to their 6th period class before lunch. February 29, 2008 was Leap Day, but it was also Career Day.
Gleaming balloons filled the hallway corridors as students sauntered back to their 5th period class to attend this hectic occasion. A special schedule was set for this day. Numerous people attended this event such as a doctor, an interior decorator, a welder, and a funeral counselor. Scholar’s radiant faces surveyed their speakers, as they confidently described their jobs.
Classrooms were silent as these tongue-tied speakers raved on about maintaining a vigorous career. The occasional mumble was heard and the creaking of chairs and stools were unavoidable. By the end of a speaker’s presentation, students were resurrected and began inquiring about different career fields.
Scholar’s seemed interested in the speakers. Mrs. Nguyen, a funeral counselor, described her job. She also mentioned morticians many times in her presentation. When finally asked what a mortician was, her reply was simple but unexpected, “A mortician is the person who prepares a body for burial. You do not want to be a mortician. It is terrifying.” We shuddered and the temperature in the room dropped enormously. Goosebumps erupted upon our skin. Pale feverish faces filled the classroom as we learned the gory and grisly tales about being a funeral counselor or a doctor.
Students were given brochures and flyers about each person’s career to look at. They studied them with great care and slowly learned about the many careers in the world. Students were able to experience firsthand the professionalism required to perform these challenging jobs.
Before Career Day began, students had to eat lunch. Students devoured their nutritious lunches as they conversed about the possible attendees to this year’s Career Day. Scholars consumed their hot lunches. The smell of lunch permeated the still, humid air around us.
Career Day was an exciting experience. It was much enjoyed and will definitely take place again. Career Day made you wonder about what you want to do with your life. As Confucius said, “Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Career Day was a thrilling day that will remain etched in our minds forever. |
