Should I remove the carbon pad out of the filter before I add

chemicals/medicines to the water? Do I have to take the carbon pad out of my tank when I add chemicals/medicines? Or can I just switch the filter off for an hour or two (another filter will still be on that doesn't have carbon pads in it)?
