Every dog is different. Are you using super good food treats to train your dogs for recall? Have you ever taken a class so you can understand how dogs learn new behaviors? Have you done any recall exercises with the dog? Dogs need to practice self control and need to learn how to listen to commands when there are distractions. You need to work on the behavior you want without the distractions first, before you add distractions. There are good books on this site.

not sure what kind of dog it is, but sounds like a siberian husky or something similar. they are bred to roam for days on end, so its what his genetic makeup is telling him to do. unfortunately there really isn't anything you can do about it. just make the fence so he can 't jump over it somehow...

Is there some kind of medicine I can give my dog to calm him down?

My dog runs from us if he is not on a leash and doesn't come back until he is exhausted. We walk him several times a day, but would like to let him off the leash to play to exert more energy but it doesn't seem possible. He'll jump the fence in our yard so we can't even let him off a leash in our backyard. We have tried training him, but it seems like he's not smart enough to get it or he can't control himself. If he sees anything move, a bird, cat, or anything he darts. What should we do? We would love it if we could let him off the leash so that he can play with our other dog who is great. We can let her off the leash and play fetch with her and she'll come right back to us when we call her. We have had them about the same amount of time, both from when they were puppies. Why is one so obedient and the other so hard to deal with?
He is neutered. It seems like it got worse after he was neutered. He didn't run off like he does now until he was about a year old.
He's 4 now.

Neutering is usually the best to calm them down. You other problems are a training issue. Be sure to take him on PORPER power walks. He is to be behind and beside you NOT in front of you. Walk him until he is tired. This establishes you as his leader and makes him tired.

When you are in the back yard with him, block him from his favorite place to go over the fence. Take that portion of the fence as yours. Block him with body, a sharpe noise (yelp) and your hand extended. Stay with it until he understands the fence is yours. He will understand pretty quickly but you will have to reinforce it everytime you are in the yard with him.

Practice calling him back to you with a long extended rope or leash. Call and offer a reward (priase or treats) and pull him back. Some times when you call him back, drop to the ground (he will come to see what in the world you are going on the ground) praise him when he comes, do NOT punish him if he does not come.
Takes time, but is doable.

My vet reccomends an over the counter anti histamine when my dog is nervous. I have given it to her when we go on road trips and it seems to work well.

Be very careful giving anytime of calmative to your dog as these medications are really tough on the kidneys. My dog had behavioral problems because he was going deaf and we had to medicate him to keep him from hurting himself (he kept running into walls and other objects) and the drugs caused kidney damage that will rob him of four or five years of his life.

I wonder if there's something in his food that's making him hyperactive? You could try him on a food with less protein in it. even if you feed the same to both your dogs it might affect them differently...
