How do you know when to use cough expectorant medicine and when to use

cough supressant medicine for toddlers? my son was on anitbiotics but it didnt do anything for his cough. he has a fever that tylenol does well keepign down and he has a cough that sounds mucousy but its only a couple coughs every couple hours, im not sure whether to try a supressant or expectorant? and the drs are closed today and for the most part he seems fine nothing severe at all. anybody have any ideas? some say allergies but none of the allergy over the counter medicines lists cough as a symptom and thats really the only symptom besides minor nose congestion.

if the cough is not to often don't give meds, just give him plenty to fdrink. If a "wet" cough gets bad - like keeping him awake give some expectorant. A humidifier or vaporizer is good because sometimes the cough is just dry throat.
