Can a change in thyroid medicine cause severe emotional upset?

About two months ago I started seeing a new endocrinologist who switched me from Armour Thyroid (it was failing to control my hypothyroidism) to Synthroid. Recently I've been having severe depression, mood swings and anxiety attacks. I'm wondering if it is because of the shift in thyroid/hormone levels or if I need to seek out psychiatric help. My endocrinologist has not offered much help - he just said it was changing hormones but didn't indicate how to control it or when to expect it to level off. This is affecting my work, marriage and health. Any body suffer from similar problems??
