Baby Medicine Question? Please Help?

My 3 month old son has a runny nose, is coughing and sneezing. Is there anything I can give him at his age? I would ask my pedi but she is such a sucky doctor that i am afraid to ask her anything...I am going to switch docs before his 4 month appt. But i just need something to get my son well again...thanks to everyone who can help.

You can't give anything.
BUT you can sucken out his nose with a nasal aspirator & saline drops(the blue bulb with the long tip) to keep his nose clear. You can use the aspirator without the drops if you don't have them.
Also, put a pillow UNDER the head of his matteress to elevate him.
Do you have a humidifier you could run in his room?
Also try rubbing a little Vick's on his chest, back and the bottoms of his feet.
Hope this helps!

The FDA just had all manufacturers of baby cold medicine for age 2 and under stop production. Make sure that if you have any left you get rid of it.

I always brought my kids into the bathroom and turned the hot water full blast in the shower. The steam will fill the room and help break up the congestion. Saline nose drops also work wonders to break it up and use a bulb syringe, or a boogey sucker as my kids call it, to get it out.

Good Luck

For just a cold, don't give him anything. Medication won't make the cold go away faster, just prevent him from "clearing out." Use a humidifier to help keep him comfortable, tylenol only for a fever, and keep him propped up so he can breathe easier. Use the bulb syringe and saline solution to keep his nasal passage clear. It really is better to just let the cold work itself out as long as he is just sneezing and coughing and not feverish.

Good luck - he will be better before you know it!

My doctor told me you really shouldn't give your baby medicines until they are 6 months old.

Over-the-counter medications are generally not helpful (certainly in children). They do not shorten the course of the cold and they do not prevent ear infections. Some of these medications will cause a child to be either jittery and "hyper" or sleepy. They are recommended when the child is very miserable and having difficulty drinking or sleeping. Please discuss with your doctor during office hours about their philosophy and recommendations for these medications, because this may vary according to your doctor. Acetaminophen or ibuprofen used for fever may be given at the same time as over-the-counter cold medicine.

its actually never a good idea to give an infant any cold medicine without doctors orders and even then i would be weary. try saline drops in the nose or breast milk if you breastfeed. Also a humidifier and perhaps some time in the bathroom with hot water runny to create steam.

Call you local ER. They will give some advice and they will be happy to give you advice. I have four small children and I didn't give them anything with consulting a doctor first til they were a year. Every baby is different.

Your baby may have allergies at his age you need to speak to a Doctor, you can't really give an infant medicine. It is better of asking a doctor your concerns than not too. It may seem hard to ask a sucky doctor for answers but I would ask the baby's doctor and if he or she gives you a answer that you are not happy with you can always call another doctor and ask them for a second opinion.
