What happens if you drink alcohol while on prescription medicine?

What happens if you drink alcohol while on prescription medicine?

I'm asking this because almost EVERY medicine says do not drink on it and i know way more than half of america is on medicine and probably 90% of them still drink alcohol. So any answers would be nice especially the ones that do drink while on medicine and what happens?
