can you give cough medicine to a dog?

our dachshund is having trouble gaging because her sinuses are not draining (or something like that) i wondered if it was safe to give cough medicine to her?
we already took her to vet and tried benadryl. or does anyone know of any other remedies.
a friend told me it could be Parainfluenza or Bordatella
