My Daughters Doctor told us not to use any medicine while she she has a cold...

.../ any problem, is this right?? So this past monday my 20 month old Daughter has had a really bad cold, coughting through the night and has been very stuffed up, which later one it starts to flow. So we brought her to her Doc. He listened to her and did what doctors do, and said oh she's fine it's just a cold, we told him that we've been giving her childrens mucinex and robitussin cough, He said to stop and just let her get better by herself. & that it's all a waste of money. i believe that that meds were working but since he told us to stop we did, the next day or two without the meds she's gotten worse! i'm gonna keep using the medicines but what should i do about her doctor?? Does any other parent have this problem with their child's doctor???, my sister in law said her doctor was the same way, is that okay.. i though doctors were suposed to subcribe Med's to get better... not to not use them at all. please help.. thanks ~~~~ now my husband and i have the same thing as my baby girl, Ugh. were taking them danmit,=)

New research has found that a cold can't be cured once it's full blown, but I give my 2yr. old the meds anyway to make him comfortable. The doctor is telling you that so you can't later come back and blame him for something since a lot of the children's meds are being pulled off the shelves due to death BECAUSE OF MISUSE as long as you follow the directions everything will be fine.

Do they make mucinex and robitussin for 20-month olds? I didn't think they did. Anyways, they pulled all that stuff from the shelves as they found that it doesn't help and can actually harm children. Just let her ride it out. The medicine doesn't help her get over a cold any faster anyways. If you must give her something for her cough, give her a teaspoon of honey. It coats the throat and will soothe it. I've tried it myself, so I know it works.

I live in turkey and the doctors here love to give you medicine or antibiotics for everything but i dont agree with them my daughter has a cold at the moment too and i havent giving her anything just karvol vapour rub on her chest and a bit of calpol i dont know if you have karvol there if not use vicks for kids it just helps them breathe better at night and day but if she has a nasty cough and it seems to be getting worse give some cough medicine just make sure its the right one for the right cough because it can make it worse if its for the wrong type of cough. But try steam take her in the bathroom run the hot tap and let her breathe in the steam it opens the airways i hope that helped it normally works for me.

Rene's right. I'm in Seattle, and all over the US they pulled almost every children's cough and cold medicine from the shelves because they had never actually been tested on children. There were some things in there that can mess with their little insides because they were all tested to cure adults. As for her not being old enough (over 2) for children's medicine, go for it, just give her half the dosage. It will still help. The only thing you can give your little one is children's Tylenol, or children's Benedryl. If you do choose to pick a couch and cold medicine, PLEASE visit the manufacturer website and make sure the product has been properly tested.
Hope she feels better! I hate it when my son feels horrible, and I feel like I can do nothing but hold him to make him feel better.

I do understand what you're going through, coz in our home we're going through the same, our ped was like yours who didn't prescribe any medicine to my daughter n seeing her going through all this made us sad, anyway my earlie ped said in the US below three years you should not give kids medicine for the cold and let it get better on its own, she said if its too trying then all u can do is give medicine before her naptime or bedtime say is the dosage says 1 tsp make it half and she prescribed us dimetapp or children's tylenol...also some steam, kids vicks vaporub, or hot chicken soup helps kids...
hope it helps, going through the same for past one week....lol but i'm sure this too shall end soon...

As my grandmother always said....

"a cold will last 2 weeks with medicine and 14 days without"

It is true. Most meds don't help the common cold. Try saline nose spray for stuffy noses, cold air for bad coughs and a good steam to break loose the yucky stuff in her lungs. Lots of love, chicken noodle soup and really soft tissue and you are good to go!

I'm not sure if this is everywhere, but in the state of Texas they pulled all of the infant cold medicine because parents were inadvertantly overdosing their kids. At 20 months, your child isn't old enough for children's medicine. So, yes, I know here they are saying that it's best to let the child ride it out. A cold isn't going to have any long term affects on the child, but taking the wrong medicine could.

He's right...let her ride it out. If anything...give her some tylenol at bedtime. Those over the counter medicines can be harmful for your children. There has been plenty of studies done.
