Who knows their dwarf (possibly Norse) mythology? What about magic loaves of bread?

I need help with a line from a poem that I am analyzing. It is from Kamala Das' "The Old Playground: "Beneath your monstrous ego I ate the magic loaf and / became a dwarf."

I did the best research I could, but all I could find was an abstract to essay about Freud and dwarfism, something about taking the whole loaf as a "magic wish to grow."

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
