Was Greek Mythology Believed as "True/Fact" back in its time?

I know it isn't know, but Did people know it was made up in its hayday. If it was believed as fact back then, than can't we compare Mythology w/ Christianity or any other religion today?

ALL mythology is a symbolic language called "Cosmocryptography" that documents great cosmo-cataclysms that have ravaged our entire Solar System, and the celestial agents are "personified" into deities (gods and goddesses) as well as mythical beasts; and their great exploits are the celestial interactions between the cosmic agents involved. These myths were set down by post-catastrophic survivors who experienced the actual extinction-level calamities and, subsequently, their TRUE meanings became lost through the passage of time and countless generations that followed; and the myths became convoluted via "mythoconvolution" during their transition via oral traditions before they were finally written down. Preistcraft, rites and rituals were established to ordain a class of people to keep alive the "sacred wisdom" and "sacred numbers" associated with the cosmocataclysmic events. Hence this is the origin of pagan religion and its "Sacred Triad" of the "Great Father Begetter God", "Great Mother Goddess of the Gods", and the "Great Child/Hero God", all being 3 interacting stars, Sirius B, Sirius A and Sirius C (our Sun), respectfully, called the "Sirian Trichotomy". Also, this is why all the "sacred numbers" integrated in ancient architecture and the "sacred sites", i.e., Stonehenge, the 3 pyramids of Egypt, etc., point to the Sirius Binary Star System. The 3 Sacred Triad ARE the 3 Sirian Trichotomy ARE the 3 pyramids at Giza/Egypt ARE the 3 stars in Orion's Belt ARE the 3 deities Osiris/Isis/Horus. Additionally, the pagan origin of the Star of David is associated with the Sirian Trichotomy.

Yes, and questioning them resulted in the death penalty.

The ancient greeks and romans thought their gods were the ones--much like our islamic and christian brothers today--in another couple of thousand years--wonder who will be god de jour.

Yes. All religions are generally regarded as real by their followers. They all bite the dust and get forgotten in the end. Just look at Yahweh's contemporaries in the early Jewish pantheon; Baal, El and Asherah. Where are they now?

Yes, it was, but of course you had doubters then as well. Also, other religious beliefs often flourished among the Greek religions.

Before there were scientific explanations for things, pretty much everything in the world was a mystery---why is the sky blue?; where does rain come from?; what is thunder?; why do the crops grow better some years than others?

So much was unknown, that the standard for truth in explanations was very low. No one really demanded that mythical explanations have utility or explanatory power, and so the veracity of myths was therefore not so much in question. There were few alternate "true" explanations.

Yes it was. They built expensive temples to their gods, offered sacrifices, preformed rituals and believed that the gods effected the world in many ways.

Yes, the same could be said about Christianity or any other modern religion.

yes, by many. no, by some... But the benefits of the gods is to man. Look up some Joseph Campbell, and you can see how the gods can help you as well. Hidden in the old Myths are the old Initiations and the keys to true psychological health.
