Why do some religious people have their own definition of mythology?

I suppose it is some atheists, too, but why do some people think that all myths told by a culture are, by definition, false.

Is it a case, like the word theory, where these people think that a dictionary has one definition per word and any word with 2 or more meanings can mean whatever they think it means?
