What's the folklore on transporting large speaker cabinets?

First of all, no road cases.
Facing up, down, or on their sides?
Guitar cabs, big bass cabs, high end home audio....

Speaker side DOWN so nothing rams through the cloth grilles and paper cones. Lift with your legs, not your back
