Jason, is the legendary Greek hero and leader of the Argonauts, the stalwarts who sailed to Colchis in the ship Argo to seize the Golden Fleece. Jason crossed a sea of marvels, accomplished difficult tasks, circumvented the guardian dragon, and returned with the fleece and the power to topple a usurper. Part of this success was due to the magic of a Colchian princess, Medea, whom Jason made his wife, with assistance from the goddess Athena. Medea seems to have been associated with dismemberment. When the Argo hastened away with its prize, she suggested that they cut up her brother Apsyrtus and throw the bits overboard in order to slow down the swift pursuit of their father, King Aietes. This the Argonauts did, forcing the Colchians to gather up the remains for a decent burial. When the heroes returned to Greece, Medea persuaded the daughters of King Pelias of Iolcus to cut their father to pieces and boil him, so as to restore him to youth. This they did, with the expected consequence, and thereby avenged the death of Jason's own father. After a few years Jason deserted Medea for Glauce, but the former wife was revenged by killing Glauce and their children. The hero himself died when a piece of the rotting Argo fell on his head. http://www.answers.com/topic/jason Demeter of Greece, Ceres of Italy—the goddess of vegetation and fruitfulness, especially corn—had several consorts, including Zeus and Poseidon. When the amorous sea god began to pursue Demeter, she was already engaged in seeking her abducted daughter Persephone. Demeter turned herself into a mare and mingled with grazing horses. Poseidon perceived the trick, and coupled with her in the shape of a stallion. Their offspring were a mysterious daughter and a black stallion. By Zeus the corn goddess bore Persephone, the dying and reviving daughter. The central myth of Demeter, which is at the heart of her relationship with Persephone, her daughter and own younger self. Persephone became the consort of Hades when she was abducted by him. Demeter had a large scope of abilities. Besides being the goddess of the harvest, she also controlled the seasons, and because of that she was capable of destroying all life on earth. In fact, her powers were able to influence Zeus into making Hades bring her daughter Persephone up from the underworld. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demeter |

Pelias, Aeson's half brother, usurped the throne of Thessaly, and killed all of Aeson's children, but Alcimede, Aeson's wife, saved her son Jason by having her attendants huddle around him and cry as if he was still born. Pelias, being cautious, consulted an oracle, who told him to beware of a man with one sandal. Jason's mother sent him to the centaur Chiron, not to be confused with the ferryman Charon, to educate him. Years later Jason traveled to Iolcus, the capital city of Pelias's kingdom, and on the way there he helped an old woman, thought to be Hera in disguise, cross a river, and he lost one of his sandals. When Jason entered the city he was announced to the king as a man with one sandal. Paranoid Pelias asked Jason what he should do if confronted by a man who would be his, the king's, downfall. Jason, in some accounts, responded by saying he, being the king, should send the man to retrieve the golden fleece. Pelias agreed to this and, thinking it impossible for a boy of his early twenties to accomplish, sent Jason after the fleece. Jason, who obtained the huge ship the Argo, assembled a great crew of men who were called the argonauts. They included the Boreads (sons of Boreas, the North Wind), Heracles, Philoctetes, Peleus, Telamon, Orpheus, Castor and Pollux, Atalanta and Euphemus. The crew traveled all over, going to The Isle of Lemnos, Doliones, Mysia, Thrace, The Symplegades, and Colchis, where the fleece was located. On Lemnos Jason encountered the women who ate their husbands. These women were cursed by Aphrodite, and killed every male to step in the island, but Jason and his crew escaped. After Lemnos the Argonauts landed among the Doliones, whose king Kyzicos treated them graciously. The Argonauts departed, losing their bearings and landing again at the same spot that night. They fought thinking the Doliones enemies, and they felt horrible, having killed the king in the battle. On Mysia Heracles's aid was lost, and Heracles started again on his trials. At Thrace the argonauts took pity on the emaciated Phineus, and killed the Harpies, who were keeping Phineus from eating more than he needed to eat to live. Helios, the sun god, was upset that Phineus chose to live a long time and be blind, than live a short amount of time but still see. At the Symplegades, or clashing islands, the Argo was the first ship to pass through and the islands stood still after that. At Colchis Hera convinced Aphrodite to strike Aeete's daughter, Medea, with a love for Jason. Medea aided Jason with the three tasks he had to preform to get the fleece. The first task was plowing a field with the fire breathing bull Khalkotauroi, and Medea gave Jason an ointment to protect his skin from the flames. The second task was to sow dragons teeth in the ground, doing this caused an army to sprout from the ground. Jason, being told what to do by Medea, threw a stone into the crowd of soldiers, and they defeated each other. The final task was to retrieve the fleece itself, which was guarded by a sleepless dragon. Medea gave Jason a potion which he sprayed over the dragon, and let him take the fleece. After this Jason sailed off with Medea for Thessaly. Back in Thessaly Medea convinced Pelias's daughters that she could make their father younger if they cut him into chunks and she boils the chunks in a pot with magical herbs. The daughters followed her directions, and Medea didn't put in the magic herbs, thus Jason became the king of Thessaly. |
