Joining the Navy. What can I expect in the "IT" rate ?

I am currently in dep. i scored a 94 on the asvab and was interested in AC but the rating was full. Because of my score I was told that I could choose anything. I was kind of overwhelmed and ended up choosing IT. I was persuaded to do nuclear but was uninterested.

I want to have a job that that can transition me into the civilian world if i decide not to re-enlist. I am basically in the military for a fresh start and for college. i have a few credits already and will enter as an E-2.

If anyone could explain what an IT does, how much time is spend on shore or off, and what things i could do out of the military, as well as promotions, and anything in general it would be very helpful.
