Top admiral details U.S.-Iranian encounter
Five Iranian high-speed attack craft accosted a trio of U.S. Navy warships Sunday in the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, the U.S. 5th Fleet commander said, prompting evasive maneuvers by the U.S. ships and reportedly bringing them close to opening fire.

No one was hurt and the Iranian boats withdrew before any shots were fired, but Pentagon and White House officials stressed Monday that the incident was dangerously provocative in the choke point through which about 20 percent of the world’s oil passes.

2 Hornets crash in Persian Gulf, crews safe
Two F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets from the carrier Harry S. Truman collided in midair over the northern Persian Gulf on Monday afternoon. Rescue teams saved the three aviators involved in the crash and safely returned all three to the ship.

The two planes — a single-pilot F/A-18E and a two-seat F/A-18F from the Truman’s embarked Carrier Air Wing 3 — were flying over the Gulf en route to a close air support mission in Iraq when the two Super Hornets crashed into each other, according to an official Navy statement. [ Read More ]


Sailor charged with falsely wearing medals
NORFOLK, Va. — A Navy petty officer has been charged with wearing ribbons and medals he didn’t earn, including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

Dontae Tazewell, a hospital corpsman assigned to a Yorktown medical clinic, is charged with one count of making a false official statement, eight counts of forging documents related to the insignia and 11 counts of wearing unauthorized badges or medals. [ Read More ]

Third sailor hospitalized in Ghana
ACCRA, Ghana — The bodies of two Virginia-based Navy sailors who were found dead in a hotel room in the West African nation of Ghana on New Year’s Eve have been flown to Germany for a post-mortem examination.

Frank Adu-Poku, the director-general of Ghana’s Criminal Investigation Department, also said Friday a third sailor who had been with the two has been hospitalized since their bodies were discovered. Adu-Poku would not comment further on the third sailor’s hospitalization, which had not previously been reported. [ Read More ]


Teen accused of killing vet won VFW contest
SCOTT CITY, Mo. — The southeast Missouri teenager who won a VFW contest last year with an essay titled “My Role in Honoring America’s Veterans” is now accused of killing a man who served in the Air Force.

Marcus Bowers, 18, of Scott City, was indicted Thursday on charges of first-degree murder in the September death of Stanley Hagan, 45. Police say Bowers slammed Hagan’s head into a tie-down stake outside the victim’s mobile home in Scott County. [ Read More ]
