| Is what the Navy recruiter told me true?
um that would be a no...they told my brother that all he would be able to do was desk work because he only has vision in one eye but when he went to sign up they said that there was a chance that he could be sent into combat....none of the recruiters are on the same page they each tell you something different...rule of thumb; it's the military...there is always a chance you will go into combat, simple as that.

A Navy recruiter's job is to find applicants, so they might twist the truth to get you to fill out an application. So I would not take they're advice. Go the official website http://www.navy.mil/navydata/faq.asp. Do you research, and if its something you want to commit than go for it. Good Luck and hope this helps.

| Is what the Navy recruiter told me true?
They cannot send you to a warzone unless you volunteer... this is true.HOWEVER...When you rose your hand and swore an oath, and joined the Navy, you DID just then Volunteer. After that, you go where the Navy decides to send you.So far as the Navy being "safe", It is the safest branch of service so far as that goes during a shooting war. There are not too many Enemy fleets out there to go one on one with us since we took out the Imperial Japanese Navy in WW2, and the Soviet Union went Bankrupt in 1991. However during peacetime, the Navy and the CoastGuard are the two most dangerous services to belong to, that is because during peacetime, the other branches danger level drops below the Navy's whereas the Navy and Coast Guard remain the same in Peace and War, Mother Nature and the unforgiving Sea does not adhere to Cease Fire Agreements. The Flight Deck of a Navy Aircraft Carrier is the most dangerous job in the US.So far as picking where you work... well that is sorta true in a way. Depending on what you qualify for and where there are open billets, you can pick and get a garaunteed "A" school. this is the school you go to after Basic Training. it is like the AIT in the Army and is where you will learn your Rate (Army: MOS). this is what your job will be. Once you are graduating from that School the navy will cut a number of orders that is the same as your graduating class size, the class then gets to pick from those assignments in class ranking order. My EW class had 12 graduates, The Navy cut 12 blank orders to 12 different commands (all were ships as EW is a seagoing only rating). The class leader got to pick from 12 orders, the next best student got to pick from the 11 remaining. the guy with the lowest score that still graduated, got no choice but to take the last set of orders. So in Summary:PICKING YOUR WORK...You get to choose what you want to be (depending on if you qualify)And you sorta get to choose where you are assigned (Depending on the orders you get to pick from)NAVY AS SAFE...Safer during actual combat, but very dangerous overall even during peacetime.NO BATTLEZONE UNLESS YOU VOLUNTEER...There is no draft, you volunteered when you joined.UPDATE:Hey Tav,please learn to spell Iraq. not Irakand yea I know it is spelled Irak in French, but you are typing ENGLISH, not French. 'k?

| Is what the Navy recruiter told me true?
Nope - this is not true. While joining the Navy might be a wee bit safer than joining the Army or the Marine Corps, all the branches of the military are being utilized in the war on terror. The Navy is being scrutinized pretty heavily because of the fact that, outside of SEALS, Seabees and Corpsmen, they really have contributed very little to the war in Iraq or Afghanistan. This causes their rather generous budget dollars to risk being shifted to other branches. Make a long story short, anyone in any job in any branch of the military can be sent wherever they need you. That's the basic premise of being in the military. There's ways to avoid going for a short while, but eventually you may be handed a set of orders to go. However, if you don't ever want to have to go to war, why join the military? Kind of a strange dichotomy.
