Asthma in the navy!?

I've been given asthma medication. but i have not had serious asthma since i was young(like 10). However i have had the inhaler prescribed(like when i get sick it always helps). I was wondering what the navy will say about this. I'm sure i could pass any physical test.I know there are ways about getting waivers if you used to be addicted to drugs ect ect, so this shouldn't be too different. Especially if i have no asthma anymore! Also, should i go to my doctor and talk to him about it? See what he can do in terms of my record and things like that?Navy sailor-GAI :First off, who said i was going to Lie about it and try and stash inhalers with me? Don't accuse me of anything like that again. Also, i am used to the heat( i live in central california average temp 110 in the summer, and we also have some of the worst air quality in the world). And finally No, because the inhaler makes me feel better when im sick, does not mean i have asthma. My friends will use it when they don't feel well, and it helps them as well.

I'm sure if you had asthsma when you were a child, and out grew it, that it should be fine. As long as you can get a doctor's note that says you don't have asthsma, you should be fine.

You need to talk to a recruiter and ask the question - if you are on medication (it doesn't matter what the meds are) it must be disclosed during the interview process. There is a physical done at the "MEPS" station and a doctor will determine the severity of your condition and if it will a deterrent to joining the service - I don't think it will, but honesty is ALWAYS the best policy.

Asthma in the navy!?

Asthma is an instant DQ. Go ahead and try to lie about it but people just like you get to boot camp in Great Lakes, IL and all the crazy weather and temperatures 365 days a year and start dropping like flies THEN we find out you have asthma at some level. You HAVE asthma if an inhaler makes you feel better when you get sick. If you make it all the way to boot camp and do drop and almost kill yourself because the Navy does not have a secret stash of inhalers hiding upder your mattress for when you "feel sick" at that point pack your bag and get on the bus you are going home. It isn't safe for you or anyone you may work with. The Navy is not known for having Navy bases in perfect weather locations and we never deploy to anywhere that great either. You people with asthma get to the 125 degree temperatures in the Gulf and almost kill yourselves because you cannot breath. Asthma is not the same thing as a drug charge as you are trying to tie the two together they are apples and oranges. We would love to have you but the asthma thing just does not work.

Asthma in the navy!?

I don't know about the navy, but I was in the army and they give about everybody a darn inhaler when you are in TX. Heck they put me in the hospital ER twice with asthma attacks, its no biggie there. Hope they are that good about it in the Navy. Most Naval positions aren't even combat physically intensive jobs, so I doubt its any biggie. In fact, I just kept mine in my uniform and used as needed. Its not a big deal anyway. Not that you would hear folks advocate for it, but some people don't mention their health history when getting signed up. Then they go to the clinics at Basic and get their meds. If they are anything like the army, the day before you start Basic, they will take everyone aside and give them a chance to fess up one last time without any repercussion and pretty much just gives them a new prescription for their meds and sends them straight on to Basic anyway. I watched them hand a kid an inhaler after that and only person I'd heard of them turning away was a girl with a heart condition. Like I said, they sent everybody else back with us to go to basic. So anyway it shouldn't be a big deal. Granted its that's the army, so good luck with the Navy-

Asthma in the navy!?

Asthma after your 13th birthday is disqualifying for entry into the armed forces. The source below is the medical standard. As far as waivers, in 2005 there were 347 requests for waivers for this condition for the Navy. 238 were granted. However, because you are on medication to control your bronchospasms, the chances of obtaining a waiver are quite slim.
