Why do Navy ships have Marines?

I heard it was so the sailors would have someone to dance with.

Why don't you get on one of those ships and ask. Do you have what it takes?

It used to be, but alas, the Marines would rather Riverdance by themselves

The Marines have one primary mission infantry. That along with other infantry related jobs are the main purpose for them. So they depend on the Navy (they are very tight) on everything else. transportation, medical (corpsman).

Few Navy ships actually have Marines onboard. Destroyers, cruisers, frigates, submarines, and support ships do not have Marine detachments. Carriers and command ships have Marines for security. Amphibious ships have Marines because they are designed for amphibious assault.
